Summer Update: Dores thriving in amateur circuit

July 12, 2016

Several current Commodores are thriving on the amateur golf circuit in some of the nation and world’s most prestigious tournaments, and current PGAer Brandt Snedeker is gearing up for another run at the Claret Jug at The Open Championship this weekend. Here’s the latest from Vanderbilt golf.

Snedeker at British Open
Snedeker is teeing it up at his eighth Open Championship this weekend, with his best finish coming in 2012 when he finished in a tie for third at Royal Lytham & St Annes. Snedeker will tee off at 8:14 a.m. local time, 2:14 a.m. Central time.

An interesting note about this year’s tournament at Royal Troon – rising senior Matthias Schwab finished runner-up at the 2012 British Amateur at Royal Troon.

Summer Play
Rising sophomore Patrick Martin just completed the prestigious Players Amateur and finished in a tie for second at the Berkeley Hall Club in Bluffton, S.C., with a final total of -11, 277 (71-68-70-68). Martin finished tied with Harrison Endycott and finished two shots behind champion Cheng Jin. Rising sophomore Will Gordon finished in a tie for 15th at the Players (74-72-69-71=286), with incoming freshman John Augenstein finishing 18th (72-72-72-71=287), and rising junior Michael Decker ending the tournament in a tie for 26th (72-73-73-72=290). Incoming freshman Mason Greenberg also participated at the Players and missed the cut.

After clinching the Palmer Cup for Team Europe in June, Matthias Schwab recently played in the European Team Championship, where his Austrian Team defeated Finland and Switzerland, and fell to Germany. Schwab won his first match, 7&6, over Finland’s Vaino Vitaharju, lost his semifinal match, 7&6, against Thomas Rosenmueller of Germany, and rebounded with a 3&2 win over Jeremy Freiburghaus of Switzerland in his final match.

Martin and Theo Humphrey also competed in the Northeast Amateur earlier this summer, where Martin finished in a tie for second at the Wannamoisett Country Club in East Providence, R.I., finishing with a final total of five-under par, 271 (68-66-68-69), which was one shot back of tournament champion Fred Wedel.

Teammate Theo Humphrey finished in a tie for 16th with a final score of one-under par, 275 (71-67-68-69).

Upcoming/current events
Humphrey is competing at the 113th Trans-Miss Championship at the Olympic Club’s Lake Course in San Francisco. The tournament will be played through July 14th.

Augenstein, Greenberg, and Andrew Jacobe are playing in the Southern Amateur July 14-17 in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
