COLUMBUS, Ohio — Just over a minute into the sudden victory period, sophomore Jennifer Tapscott notched her fourth assist of the day on classmate Kendall Thrift’s fourth goal as Vanderbilt handed American Lacrosse Conference rival Ohio State its first defeat in league play.

Tapscott and Thrift led the Commodores with six points apiece. Junior Kate Hickman and freshman Margie Curran each had four points in the victory. Regina Oliver led the Buckeyes with three goals and an assist.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made nine saves, including one at the end of the first overtime period.

Vanderbilt opened a quick 3-0 in the eighth minute, with goals coming from senior Meg Spies, Curran and Hickman. The Buckeyes scored their first goal in the 11th minute.

After the teams traded goals, OSU mounted a 3-0 run of their own to tie the game up at halftime, 6-6. Junior Bryn Sedlacek, Thrift and Hickman scored the final three first half goals for Vanderbilt.

In the second half, OSU scored the first two tallies, but a five-goal VU run gave the Dores an 11-8 lead in the 42nd minute. Curran (2), Tapscott (2) and Thrift contributed to the run.

In the final 16 minutes of the game, the Buckeyes chipped away at the Vanderbilt lead and eventually tied the match in the 58th minute.

In overtime, a Hickman goal in the 63rd minute gave Vanderbilt the early advantage, 13-12, before the teams switched sides for the second three minutes.

With one second on the clock, an Oliver free-position goal sent the game into sudden victory period.

The Commodores won the opening draw of the second half, but struggled to get into their offensive zone. Freshman Sasha Cielak made a clean check and was fouled going for the ball, giving VU back the possession.

Vanderbilt settled into its offense, and Tapscott quickly found a streaking Thrift for the deciding goal.

The Dores controlled 15 draws to OSU’s 11, with Curran coming up with five and Tapscott picking up three. Cielak, Sedlacek and senior Kim Gianis each caused a pair of Buckeye turnovers, including Gianis’ second-half interception that ended an Ohio State fast-break.

The Commodores (6-6, 3-2 ALC) will travel to Charlottesville, Va., next weekend for a Sunday matchup with defending national champion Virginia.
