NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Commodores boast a combined singles and doubles record of 10-3 after Thursday’s tournament action at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional at Vanderbilt’s Currey Tennis Center. Six Commodores will advance to singles main draw round of 32, which begins after the conclusion of second round doubles.
“I think it was a good day. I saw a lot of things I liked,” said head coach Ian Duvenhage. “A number of guys played some very good matches. I was very happy with Baker Newman, losing in the first set and coming back to win 6-1 in the third. I thought Kris Yee played a really good match. Daniel Valent played a good match as well. There were a lot of positive things and hopefully we can have another good day tomorrow.”
The pairing of Jeffrey Offerdahl and Kris Yee came out with an 8-4 victory in first round doubles against Murray State’s Will True and Srdjan Trosic. The duo advance to the second round where they will face Hunter Reese and Bartosz Sawicki out of rival the University of Tennessee.
Two other Commodore doubles duos join Offerdahl and Yee in the second round. The No. 22 pairing of Gonzales Austin and Rhys Johnson take on Tennessee Tech’s Eduardo Mena and Alvaro Cintas on court one first thing Friday morning. On court two Baker Newman and Ryan Smith compete against SEC foe Trey Yates and Kevin Lai out of the University Kentucky. All of Vanderbilt’s doubles matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT and take place on the outdoor courts.
A total of 84 matches are scheduled to be played tomorrow on both outdoor and indoor courts of the Currey Tennis Center. Second round doubles play will begin at 8:30 a.m. CT Friday morning with third round singles to follow. After the conclusion of singles, first round singles consolation will begin. 4th round singles takes the courts, then second round consolations, and the third round of main draw doubles will cap off the Friday regional play.
