Streak Ends in Oxford

Men's tennis suffers 4-3 road defeat to Ole Miss

OXFORD, Miss. — No. 11 Vanderbilt men’s tennis saw its win streak snapped in the last contest of a four-match road trip, as the Commodores fell 4-3 to Ole Miss on Sunday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

“I’m still proud of the guys,” head coach Scott Brown said. “We put ourselves in a position to win, and today just didn’t go our way. That’s part of life and part of tennis. I want to give credit to Ole Miss; they competed well and deserved the win.”

The black and gold came out firing early, fending off the Rebels at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to collect the doubles point. The No. 49 ranked duo of senior Nathan Cox and freshman Hoyoung Roh got back in the win column, downing Kai Milburn and Isac Stromberg 6-4. After the Rebels evened the score with a win at Court 3, sophomore Pablo Martinez Gomez and junior Danil Panarin anchored it down for Vanderbilt. The Dore duo claimed a ranked win over No. 63 Stefano D’Agostino and Pietro Pampanin 7-6 (5) to give Vandy an early 1-0.

Vanderbilt continued to push the momentum at the start of singles play with three first sets going the way of the black and gold. Cox posted the second point on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 takedown of Vlado Jankanj. Junior Hugo Coquelin put the Dores on the doorstep at No. 6 singles, moving past Isac Stromberg 6-3, 6-2. With full control of the momentum, Vanderbilt was unable to find the decisive moment and close the door on Ole Miss. The Rebels strung together wins at Courts 2, 3 and 1 to make the score 3-3 with No. 5 singles entering a third set. Freshman Jack Satterfield could not overcome the Rebels’ Noah Schlagenhauf, and Ole Miss notched the clinching point 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 to bring home the team victory.

“For this team to play their first five of six SEC matches on the road and go 4-2 shows how tough these young men are becoming,” Brown said.We leave with a lot of confidence from these first three weeks of conference play. The team will be back at home, take a full reset and get back to a 0-0 mentality. Time to fight back starting Friday.”

Vanderbilt will compete at home for the first time in 18 days on Friday in a doubleheader against Auburn (13-2, 2-1 SEC) and Xavier (5-8, 1-1 Big East). For more information, updates and exclusive match day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
