Stewart, Schwab named to Palmer Cup teams

April 17, 2015

Vanderbilt senior Hunter Stewart and sophomore Matthias Schwab were selected Friday to the Palmer Cup, a Ryder-Cup type competition that pits 10 of the best U.S. collegiate golfers against 10 of the top European collegiate players. Stewart, from Lexington, Ky., was selected to the United States team, while Schwab, from Rohrmoos, Austria, will play for the Europeans.

The event, which will take place at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Illinois, June 12-14, is named after golf legend Arnold Palmer, a staunch advocate and supporter of college golf.

Stewart has had a stellar senior season and has averaged 69.52 strokes per round as a senior, the lowest in the SEC and the lowest ever by a Vanderbilt golfer. He has won three individual tournaments in 2014-15 – the Carmel Cup, the Tavistock Collegiate Invitational, and the Mason Rudolph Championship – and has had nine top 10 finishes, with his worst finish this season a tie for 11th.

Schwab has averaged 70.40 strokes per round in 15 rounds as a sophomore and has carded three top five finishes in his last three tournaments of the regular season and claimed one individual title at the Mason Rudolph Championship. After missing fall competition due to a back injury, Schwab has averaged 69.0 strokes per round in his last nine rounds of regular season play this spring.

Stewart and Schwab’s selections to the Palmer Cup are the third and fourth for Vanderbilt as a program, respectively. Luke List made the United States team in 2006 and 2007, while Brandt Snedeker was selected to the U.S. team in 2003. Schwab becomes the Commodores’ first selection to the European squad.
