The SEC men’s golf coaches have recognized the Commodores’ historic 2014-15 season by naming senior Hunter Stewart as the league’s player of the year, sophomore Matthias Schwab as a first-team All-SEC member, freshman Theo Humphrey as a second-team All-SEC and All-Freshman team member, and junior Carson Jacobs as a second-team All-SEC selection in an announcement made by the SEC office Thursday. The four SEC honorees are the most ever in a single season for Vanderbilt.
The awards cap an excellent regular season, with the Commodores posting second or better in eight of 11 tournaments and winning their own Mason Rudolph Championship in April of this year.Â
Stewart becomes the second Vanderbilt student-athlete to be named SEC Player of the Year this spring, joining Gonzales Austin of the men’s tennis team.Â
Stewart, a senior from Lexington, Ky., becomes Vanderbilt’s first SEC Player of the Year after averaging an all-time program-best 69.40 strokes per round this season. He won three individual titles, carded five top-five finishes, and nine top 10’s in 2014-15, with his worst result being a tie for 11th at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational in October. Stewart was also named to the Palmer Cup U.S. team and as a semifinalist for the Ben Hogan Award earlier this spring.Â
Off the course, Stewart was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in 2012 and 2013.
Stewart, also named as a first-team All-SEC selection, and Schwab became the Commodores’ 8th and 9th first-team honorees in the history of the program, and the first since 2007 when Jon Curran and Luke List were named to the first team. List made the All-SEC First team in all four years he attended Vanderbilt (2004-07), while Brandt Snedeker was named to the first team in 2002 and 2003.
Schwab has averaged 70.39 strokes per round as a sophomore, and has carded three top finishes and garnered one individual title at the Mason Rudolph Championship. The sophomore from Rohrmoos, Austria, has had five rounds in the 60’s this season, including a 66 in the first round of the Talis Park Challenge in March. Schwab was named to the all-freshmen team a year ago, as well as the SEC First-Year Academic Honor Roll.Â
Humphrey has played in all 30 rounds as a freshman, averaged 71.23 strokes per round, and carded four top 10 finishes in being named to the All-SEC 2nd team and the All-SEC Freshman team. The freshman from Greenwich, Conn., has had 12 rounds in the 60’s with a low round of 66 coming in the third round of the Schenkel Invitational.
Jacobs, a junior from Hendersonville, Tenn., has averaged 71.47 strokes per round in 2014-15 and carded three top 10 finishes. Jacobs finished second at the prestigious Tavistock Collegiate in October behind teammate Hunter Stewart when he shot a 12-under, 204. He carded a team season-low 64 in the first round of the DICK’s Collegiate Challenge Cup and posted seven rounds in the 60’s this year. Academically, Jacobs was named to the 2014 SEC Academic Honor Roll last spring.
The four honorees this year have posted four of the top seven stroke averages in the history of the program – Stewart’s 69.40 is first all-time, Schwab’s 70.39 is third, Humphrey’s 71.23 is sixth, and Jacobs’ 71.47 is seventh.
