Stellar Night One

Dores command strong SEC Championships debut

AUBURN, Ala. – Making their SEC Championship debut, the Vanderbilt swimming team started strong to race two season-best times on Tuesday at the James E. Martin Aquatic Center.

“It was a good start to the week. Both relays swam season-best times so that’s a really positive start and something we can build on for the rest of the week,” said head coach Jeremy Organ.

Opening with the 200-yard medley relay, sophomore Abby Burke led the Dores in backstroke pacing the relay at 25.62 followed by Lizzy Colwell dominating in breaststroke.

Sophomore Tonner DeBeer excelled in butterfly while freshman Chantal Jordan closed the race for the Commodores touching in at 1:40.60 to mark a season-best time for the relay.

In the 800 free relay, Colwell led the Dores to send off freshman Allison Bauer at 1:52.45. Fellow freshman Taylor Ward raced the third leg (1:53.38) followed by Burke closing her second relay of the night to touch the wall at 7:29.83.

“It is a long week so we have to take everything day by day. Tomorrow is a new day so we’ve got to come in in the morning with lots of enthusiasm and excitement for the meet. I hope to keep it going for tomorrow,” said Organ.

The Commodores will return to action Wednesday morning to compete in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley and 50 free. Vanderbilt will close the day competing in the finals of the preliminary events and will conclude with the 200 free relay.
