BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Wednesday, the SEC league office announced that Vanderbilt men’s golfer Jon Ed Steed earned his second career SEC Freshman of the Week after his fourth-place finish at the Linger Longer Invitational.
Steed collected the first top-five finish of his young collegiate career, claiming fourth place at the Linger Longer Invitational with a career-low score of 9-under 207. The Enterprise, Alabama, native earns his second SEC Freshman of the Week honor, as he also won the award back on Oct. 22 of this season.
The freshman carded under par in each round at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee, posting scores of 69-70-68. Steed’s best round of the Linger Longer Invitational came on Sunday, as he closed the event by posting 4-under 68. His Round 3 score of 4-under marked a career-low 18-hole score vs. par for Steed. The freshman’s 16 birdies led the Commodores and tied for fifth-most at the Linger Longer Invitational.
His performance helped the Commodores post a third-place finish at the Linger Longer Invitational. Vandy carded 20-under 844 to post the team’s best score of the spring, while it is the second-lowest total of the season.
Vanderbilt has now collected four SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season, with Steed and Michael Riebe each claiming two.
Steed is having a strong first season with the Commodores. The freshman currently ranks third on the team in scoring average at 71.33, while he has had 16 of his 21 rounds count.
The No. 11/10-ranked Vanderbilt men’s golf team returns to the course next weekend, as the Commodores are set to host the annual Mason Rudolph Championship. Play takes place April 4-6 at Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tennessee. Check back with VUCommodores.com for a full tournament preview.
