NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt football team will wait until Friday to begin preseason practice after receiving notification late Wednesday from the Southeastern Conference office that indicated an incorrect scheduled start date.
The Commodores initially expected to start preseason camp Thursday, but made the decision late today after getting word from league officials that practices could not begin until Friday. The NCAA ruling states that teams have 29 preseason practice opportunities, taking into consideration such issues as the first day of fall classes, scheduling of two-a-day practices, and the date of the opening game.
Head Coach Bobby Johnson made the decision to delay camp with Vanderbilt athletic officials after receiving the league notice.
“The league simply said we were mistaken in interpreting when we could start our preseason schedule,” Johnson said. “After numerous discussions with the SEC, we decided that delaying practice by a day was the right action.
“We feel fortunate that the SEC informed us when they did. As disappointed as we are, the schedule still allows us to get in all of our allotted practice opportunities, days off and even gives many of our players enrolled in classes extra time with their books. It will have absolutely no effect on our preparation for the season opener,” Johnson added.
The Commodores will open the season by traveling to Oxford, Ohio to play the Miami RedHawks on Thursday, August 28. The team will host South Carolina in its home opener on Thursday, Sept. 4 in front of an ESPN national audience.
