Birmingham, Ala. – Two Vanderbilt standouts – running back Zac Stacy and defensive lineman Rob Lohr – were named to the preseason All-Southeastern Conference team today following a vote of the league’s 14 head coaches.
Stacy, a senior from Centreville, Ala., was named to the coaches’ second-team offense. Lohr, a redshirt senior from Phoenixville, Pa., was named to the third-team defense.
The coaches’ preseason squad was announced by the SEC Office less than a week before the conference stages its annual Media Days activity in Hoover, Ala. Writers attending SEC Media Days also will vote on their own preseason all-conference squad. The Commodores contingent of Stacy, senior quarterback Jordan Rodgers, senior defensive back Trey Wilson and Head Coach James Franklin will gather with media members next Tuesday.
Stacy became Vanderbilt’s all-time single-season rusher during a tremendous 2011 year that concluded with All-SEC recognition. The 5-9, 210-lb. Stacy broke the Commodore single-season record with 1,193 rushing yards, averaging 5.9 yards per carry. He also tied a school record with 14 rushing touchdowns.
Stacy also surpassed 100 rushing yards in five games as a junior, topped by efforts of 198 yards in a win over Army and 184 yards in a victory at Wake Forest. He also tallied three rushing touchdowns against Army, Wake Forest and Kentucky.
Stacy enters his final season No. 2 among active SEC backs with 2,002 career rushing yards and 20 rushing touchdowns. He needs 631 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns to become the Commodore career leader.
The preseason All-SEC recognition is Stacy’s second accolade in recent days. This Monday, he was named to the preseason watch list for the Maxwell Award, given annually to the nation’s top offensive player.
A starter of 25 consecutive games entering his senior year, Lohr ranks among the leading defensive tackles in the SEC in several categories, including tackles for loss and quarterback sacks. In 2011, Lohr ranked second among Vanderbilt defenders with with single-season career highs of five sacks and 11.5 tackles for loss. He also posted a pair of forced fumbles and 41 total tackles.
Lohr, also named as a preseason All-SEC recipient in Phil Steele’s College Football Edition, tops all active Commodores with nine quarterback sacks and 20.5 tackles for loss. He needs eight tackles to reach 100 for his career.
