NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt’s women soccer team will face Mexico’s U20 National Team in an exhibition match on Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. at the VU Soccer Complex.
Mexico is currently in training for the FIFA Women’s U20 World Cup to be held in Chile November 20 to December 7.
“The U20 Mexican team was looking for the best possible talent in preparation for the World Cup and sought to play good clubs in various regions in the country,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie.
The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is a world championship football tournament, organized by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association), for national teams of women under age 20.Mexico qualified for the championship by finishing third at the CONCAF tournament earlier this summer.
The contest will mark the opening of the 2008 season for the Commodores who look to build upon a rebuilding season a year ago.
“I hope the match raises soccer awareness in our community in support of Vanderbilt soccer,” said Coveleskie. “Anytime you can get a national team to come in and play on your home field, it only makes your players better. It should be a fantastic experience to play against a high-level player that is going to be competing at an international level in the next few months.”
Following the match both teams will be available for autographs.
Tickets prices will be $10 for adults and $5 for youth. Group pricing is available for $8. They will be available through the Vanderbilt ticket office by calling (615) 322-GOLD.
