Women?s team looks to continue success from last year?s banner squad

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt opens its 22nd season of women’s soccer Friday night as the team hosts Colorado in the Vanderbilt Classic at 7:30 p.m. at the VU Soccer Complex.

The Commodores have a veteran group returning from last year?s team which posted a 16-3-3 record and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the sixth time in school history.

VU is ranked as high as 19th in the preseason polls by Soccer America. The squad is also ranked No. 22 by the National Soccer Coaches Association, No. 24 by TopDrawerSoccer.Com and No. 29 by Soccer Buzz.

The Commodores will look to avenge a season opening loss to Colorado last season in Boulder in the first ever meeting between the schools. The Buffaloes are coming off of an NCAA tournament season as well as they finished 2005 with a 12-8-4 mark.

Alabama and Denver will open the Classic tomorrow at 5 p.m. The Crimson Tide return eight starters from last year?s team that finished with an 8-8-2 overall record. They will turn around and play Colorado at noon on Sunday.

VU will play Denver on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. to close out the tourney. The Pioneers went 8-9-2 in 2005 and lost to the Commodores by a 2-0 score at the Colorado Classic.
