WASHINGTON – Vanderbilt soccer opened the 2024 season at No.21/RV Georgetown with a scoreless draw on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field.
Goalkeeper Sara Wojdelko posted three saves in the match to register the fifth shutout of her career. The three stops tied for the match-high.
“Our team defending was very good and we stood up in moments when we needed to,” said head coach Darren Ambrose. “We got several big saves from Wojdelko when Georgetown got into dangerous positions. She showed her maturity and confidence in big moments.”
Each team produced four shots on goal in the draw. After Georgetown held a 4-1 edge in shots on target in the first half, the Dores owned the better of the chances in the second half with a 3-0 advantage.
Sophomore Sydney Watts made her first career start for the Commodores, while transfers Jessica Hinton, Julianne Leskauskas and Maci Teater made their first Vandy starts.
“I am really proud of how we went about this game,” said Ambrose. “We had a lot of the ball and defended a good Georgetown team very well. We needed a little more quality in the final third, but overall it was a great start and a good team performance.”
Vanderbilt hosts Belmont on Thursday night in its home opener. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be shown on SECN+.
