Vanderbilt continues four-game homestand

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt soccer continues its longest homestand of the 2023 season this weekend hosting Kansas State Thursday at 7 p.m. and Northwestern Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Soccer and Lacrosse Complex.

SERIES HISTORY

 Kansas State

  • This is the first-ever matchup against Kansas State.

Northwestern

  • Northwestern leads the all-time series 1-0-0.
  • The two programs met for the first time during the 2022 NCAA Tournament when Northwestern claimed a 2-1 victory over the Commodores to continue in the tournament.
  • Despite being tied 0-0 at the half, Northwestern opened the second half with two goals to go up 2-0. Vanderbilt kept attacking and in the 83rd minute earned a penalty kick which Ella Shamburger slotted past the Wildcat keeper for her fourth goal on the season.

The Commodores tallied their second shutout of the year last Sunday in a 2-0 victory over Belmont. The Dores outshot the Bruins 20-2, marking the lowest shot total by a Vandy opponent this season.

Junior Rachel Deresky scored her first goal of the season (eighth career) after a Vanderbilt corner kick right to freshman Ella Eggleston at the midway point of the first half. Eggleston headed the ball to Deresky who found the back of the net from inside the box.

Eggleston tallied her second goal of the season on a second-chance ball. Caroline Betts found Eggleston inside the keeper box but her first attempt was blocked by Belmont keeper Sarah Boyle. Eggleston then got the rebound and tapped in the ball for Vandy’s second score.

Preseason Honors

  • Five Commodores highlighted the SEC Preseason Watchlist – Maya Antoine, Abi Brighton, Rachel Deresky, Hannah McLaughlin and newcomer Jada Konte.
  • Antoine was also named to the United Soccer Coaches 2023 Preseason Watchlist for Defenders.
