LB Cunningham putting up All-SEC defensive totals

Despite not becoming a starter until the fourth game this season, Zach Cunningham has established himself as one of the SEC’s most productive defenders, ranking among league leaders in several defensive stats.

Cunningham, a redshirt sophomore from Pinson, Ala., has registered double-digit tackles in five of the last games, topped by a 15-tackle effort in Vanderbilt’s win at Middle Tennessee. He has at least 10 stops against four SEC opponents: Ole Miss, South Carolina, Florida and Kentucky.

In Cunningham’s last seven appearances, he has amassed 70 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, three forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Cunningham ranks among the SEC Top Ten in fumble recoveries (3, 1st), tackles for loss (13.5, T-3rd), forced fumbles (3, T-3rd), solo tackles (49, 6th) and total tackles (79, T-10th). Commodore

Defense: 10-of-10 keeping foes under season scoring average

The Commodore defense has held all 10 opposing offenses below their season average in points this year. The unit has been virtually just as effective limiting offensive total yardage.

Last week, Vanderbilt held Kentucky to 17 points and 352 yards, one week after limiting SEC East champion Florida offense to just nine points and 258 total yards. Vanderbilt’s last four opponents — Missouri, Houston, Florida and Kentucky — have been held 13.6 points and 106.8 yards below their season averages.

Texans on the Commodore roster

Seven Vanderbilt student-athletes hail from Texas, including potential defensive starters Adam Butler (R-Jr., DL, Duncanville) and Andrew Williamson (Sr., safety, San Antonio).

Other Texans on the roster are Sekou Clark (R-Fr., DL, Denton), Winston Guillory (Fr., WR, Dallas), Ronald Monroe (R-Fr., WR, Houston), Dare Odeyingbo (R-Jr., DE, Irving) and John Webb (Fr., QB, Dallas).
