LEXINGTON, Ky. – After the first day of singles and doubles main draw play at the USTA/ITA Ohio Valley Regional, the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team has several participants still in contention. Through the opening round in singles action, there are six Commodores still vying to represent the Ohio Valley region in the ITA National Indoor Championships in November. In the doubles draw, one Vanderbilt duo will play in the quarterfinal round on Saturday morning.
In singles play, Charlie Jones, Ryan Lipman, Adam Baker, Bryant Salcedo, Blake Bazarnik and Alex Zotov all advanced to the round of 32. Zotov’s opponent, Eric Ramos of Purdue, withdrew for Zotov to move to the second round. Jones and Lipman each picked up straight set wins, as Jones topped East Tennessee State’s Jeremy Bonnevalle, 6-2, 6-1, while Lipman defeated Andrew Hanley of Dayton, 6-0, 6-1.
Salcedo fell in his first set, 5-7, to Purdue’s Han-Frans Engelbrecht, but came back and claimed the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2, to advance to the second round. Bazarnik also dropped his first set, falling 3-6 to Justin Kirstein of Tennessee Tech, but rallied back with 6-0, 7-5 wins in the next two sets. Baker defeated Purdue’s Aaron Dujove, 6-2, 6-4, in his first round match.
In the doubles field, Lipman and Baker will play in the quarterfinals on Saturday morning after defeating Taylor Patrick and Bryan Swartz of Tennessee, 8-3, in the round of 16 match. The duo cruised in their opening round match with an 8-1 win over Eastern Kentucky’s Niklas Schroeder and Philip Janz.
Doubles play resumes Saturday morning at the University of Kentucky tennis complex. Singles matches will be played Saturday afternoon at the Lexington Tennis Club due to the football game on campus.
