Shittu Claims SEC Freshman of the Week

Vanderbilt freshman forward Simisola Shittu claimed SEC Freshman of the Week honors from the league office in Birmingham, Ala. on Monday after averaging 19 points, nine rebounds and 3.5 assists against UNC Asheville and Ole Miss.  Shittu is the Commodores’ second Freshman of the Week selection, joining Darius Garland, who won the honor in the first week of the season.

Shittu converted 11 of his 16 (68.8 percent) field goals for the week. In his inaugural SEC matchup with Ole Miss, Shittu, the Commodores’ leading scorer and rebounder, scored a career-high 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished out three assists against the Rebels. He started the week with a 17-point, nine-rebound and four-assist effort against UNC Asheville.

Shittu’s selection marks only the second time Vanderbilt has had two freshman garner Freshman of the Week honors in the same season.  In 2014-15, Riley LaChance and Wade Baldwin IV were honored by the league that season.
