Tom Shaw, Vanderbilt’s Head Men’s Golf Coach, is caddying for Michael Thompson at the 2008 Masters. Thompson played for Shaw at Tulane before transferring to the University of Alabama prior to last season. He earned a spot in this week’s event by finishing second at the 2007 U.S. Amateur. Shaw will be contributing exclusive content from Augusta to vucommodores.com all week.
SUNDAY, APRIL 6
I made my caddie debut today at Augusta National. Before I was allowed to tote the bag, I had to put on the famous white jumpsuit and green Masters hat. I felt like Will Smith as Agent J in “Men In Black” putting on “the last suit you’ll ever need”. I must say, there is something about putting on this uniform that gives the experience special meaning. To be a caddie at Augusta National during the Masters is a distinct honor.
Once we got to the practice facility, Michael struck up a game with J.B. Holmes and Jerry Kelley. Holmes is the longest player on the PGA Tour and launches drives that leave you open-mouthed in awe. It was tough not to be distracted by the long ball clinic he was putting on. Kelley was the exact opposite – short but steady, a savvy six-time Masters participant.
We had the back nine to ourselves as our playing companions left us to practice. It was then a pleasant walk for the two of us down Amen Corner at Augusta National, holes 11-13, where so many Masters tournaments have been won and lost. It is hard to believe you are walking the same grounds as the greats of the last 70 years.
Probably the most excited Michael was today was when he received the keys to his courtesy car, a S550 Mercedes. To see a college kid experience this kind of luxury was a great sight. Like a kid in a candy store, Michael is savoring every little perk that deservedly comes his way as a Masters participant.
Tomorrow we have the pleasure of playing with Vanderbilt legend Brandt Snedeker, along with Boo Weekley and Heath Slocum. Since I am carrying Michael’s University of Alabama’s bag, it will be nice to get an extra Commodore in the group to balance the school spirit. I am at least carrying a Vanderbilt towel with Michael’s bag (he hasn’t seen it yet – but as a caddie, I control the bag.).
Off to bed to rest some sore bones.
