The Commodore Scramble concluded on Sunday and five Vanderbilt athletes took home hardware for their strong weekend performances.

Senior Daniel Valent and freshman Maxwell Freeman both won singles championships in their respective brackets after facing Commodore teammates in the championship round. Valent defeated Billy Rowe by a score of 6-3, 6-4 in the ‘A’ singles draw and Freeman earned a victory over fellow freshman George Harwell in a hard fought battle that finished up at 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the ‘B’ draw.

Lachlan McPhee and Billy Rowe took Louisville’s George Hedley and Federico Gomez down to the wire in the doubles championship, but ultimately fell just short by a score of 7-6 with a 7-3 tiebreak to finish as the tournament’s runners-up. Despite the loss, the 16th-ranked duo of McPhee and Rowe still finished the tournament 3-1 as a pair and picked up victories against Fischer/Zhu (Bama), Sarrio/Durham (AUB) and teammates Harwell/Freeman (VU) along the way.

Next up for Vanderbilt men’s tennis is a trip to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the ITA Regional from Oct. 19-23 to continue the fall season.
