NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeastern Conference released its men’s tennis preseason poll, Thursday afternoon. The Vanderbilt tennis team was picked to finish seventh overall, as selected by the conferences head coaches.
Defending SEC champion and NCAA semifinalist, Georgia, was once again selected to win the conference title. In-state rival Tennessee was selected to finish second, with Texas A&M (3), Kentucky (4), Florida (5) and Ole Miss (6) each being selected above the ‘Dores.
The preseason poll is voted on by the men’s tennis head coach at each institution and is based on a 13-12-11-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 vote. The team they vote in the number one spot gets their vote for overall champion, with each vote counting as one point.
No. 16 Vanderbilt enters the 2014 following its best finish at NCAA’s since 2004 and stats the season with its highest ITA preseason ranking since 2009 when the ‘Dores opened the year at No. 27.
Vandy opens its season this Sunday, January 19 with a doubleheader against Marquette (12 p.m.) and Belmont (4:30 p.m.).
The Commodores will then host the “official” college tennis season opener in the ITA Kick-off weekend on January 25 and 26. The ‘Dores will welcome Texas, Wake Forest and LSU to the Currey Tennis Center.
