NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team generated back-to-back home shutout wins on Wednesday at the Lummis Tennis Center to begin the 2026 campaign 2-0.
“First off, I wanted to talk about the freshmen and guys playing in their first match,” head coach Scott Brown said. “Hoyoung Roh had his first official match representing the black and gold. I’m proud of his performance today getting his first doubles and singles wins. Jack Satterfield had a great battle today. And Cayden Wang showed some incredible fight as well. I remember my first college match, there are a lot of nerves involved. But all these guys were composed; I’m really proud of them and wanted to give them some of the spotlight.”
The Dores opened against the Tigers of Tennessee State (0-3), who returned to Nashville after suffering losses to UAB and Memphis. Vandy did not allow any opportunity for a bounce back, quickly notching wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Tennessee State forfeited the No. 3 doubles position due to player count. In singles play, sophomore Callum Markowitz got the ball rolling at the No. 3 spot with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Alex Adamec. The Dores followed suite at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 positions, holding Tennessee State to three games won or less in each set. After a second set scare between freshman Cayden Wang and the Tigers’ Tatenda Mutetwa, Wang hung on 7-6 (3) to seal the match and deliver Vanderbilt a flawless win.
Vandy switched multiple players for its second match versus Tennessee Tech, sending Hoyoung and Satterfield out for their first collegiate matches. It was not a warm welcome for Satterfield, who was partnered with junior Danil Panarin as the No. 42 ranked duo. The two fell 7-6 (4) to Murilo Burckhardt and Linus Rohlin. Despite the blemish, the Dores grabbed wins in the other two doubles matchups to continue their dominant day. Hoyoung swiftly produced his first singles win for the black and gold with a 6-0, 6-2 trounce of Alex Alvarez. Satterfield got his revenge on the Golden Eagles, outlasting Davids Spaks 6-4, 6-2 for a victory at the No. 4 slot. Vanderbilt did not slow down the rest of the way, ultimately finishing off the 7-0 sweep.
“From a culture standpoint, this is the best it’s been in the last three years,” Brown said. “The team spirit was rock solid today. Obviously, we can still get better, it’s only our first two matches. But overall, I was very pleased with what I saw from the guys today […]. We tried some new teams out, and it wasn’t always perfect, but once we got going, it looked pretty good out there.”
It is the third straight year the Commodores have started the spring season at least 2-0. Vanderbilt moves to 32-4 against Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech in the all-time series between the programs. The Dores outscored the Tigers and Golden Eagles 163-61 in combined games throughout Wednesday’s matches.
“We have a lot of stuff to keep working on, it’s still very early in the season,” Brown concluded. “We’ve just got to keep building. We have a good battle coming up against Northwestern on Saturday, so our focus and preparation now moves to that. We have to keep the mindset that we’re 0-0 and that we have to prove ourselves again and again.”
Vanderbilt travels to Evanston, Illinois for a road matchup with Northwestern on Saturday, with play set to begin at noon. For more information, updates and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
