LOS ANGELES β Vanderbiltβs 2022 campaign came to an end Friday night at Wallis Annenberg Stadium as the Commodores fell 2-1 to No. 12 Northwestern in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Vanderbilt kept pace with the fourth-seeded Wildcats on Friday, a week after the Dores knocked off fifth-seeded Clemson on the road. Neither team earned many chances in the first half and the score remained 0-0 after 45 minutes with just three combined shots on target.
Northwestern broke through in the 54th minute to go in front 1-0. Vanderbilt answered a little over 10 minutes later with a goal of their own, but it was called back due to offsides.
The Commodores kept up the pressure, but Northwestern mounted a counterattack in the 81st minute that resulted in a second goal to lead by two with 10 minutes to play.
Nevertheless, Vanderbilt kept attacking and in the 83rd minute earned a penalty kick which Ella Shamburger slotted past the Wildcat keeper for her fourth goal on the season.
