Sept. 14, 2015

Vanderbilt tight end Steven Scheu has been selected as one of 30 Football Bowl Subdivision student-athletes to be tabbed as a candidate for the 2015 Senior CLASS Award.
The Senior CLASS Award recognizes student-athletes who have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Scheu, a 2014 Second Team All-SEC selection, led all SEC tight ends in catches and ranked second in yards last season. His 525 receiving yards were the most by a Vanderbilt tight end since 1983. Scheu is also a candidate for the Mackey Award, given annually to the nation’s top tight end.
A native of Evansville, Ind., Scheu will graduate in December with a degree in medicine, health and society and plans to seek an MBA. He is a three-time selection to the SEC Academic Honor Roll and two-time member of the team’s leadership council. This fall, Scheu returned to the field after a serious ankle injury kept him out of the Black and Gold Spring Game and required surgery.
Off the field, Scheu has spent the last two summers completing internships in the accounting and finance departments with Ingram Industries and MediCopy Services. Additionally, he has made regular visits to Vanderbilt’s Children’s Hospital and actively participated in the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. He has also volunteered at Little Sisters of the Poor Nursing Home in his hometown and read to underprivileged children as part of the Upper Room program. This summer, Scheu joined team members to clean up the grounds at a local park.
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
The list of 30 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists midway through the regular season. The ballot of finalists will be available for a nationwide vote and be distributed to media and coaches with the winner being announced in January.
