Saturday Sweep Ends Skid

Vanderbilt men's tennis ends losing streak with back-to-back shutouts over Ole Miss, Eastern Illinois

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt men’s tennis team ended its 10-match skid with sweeps of Ole Miss and Eastern Illinois in Saturday’s doubleheader at the Lummis Tennis Center.

“I’m proud of the guys today and they completely deserved it,” head coach Scott Brown said. “Today was a culture win and a testament to the growing strength of our culture.”

Against Ole Miss, the Dores secured the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. No. 63-ranked junior Nathan Cox and senior Michael Ross notched their fourth ranked doubles victory of the season to clinch the advantage, downing No. 51 Kai Milburn and Isac Stromberg 6-3. It is the pair’s fourth ranked win this year, now tied for the team high with fifth year Henry Ruger and sophomore Hugo Coquelin.

The momentum continued to build in singles play. Sophomores Danil Panarin and Pablo Martinez Gomez each netted straight set victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. With Vandy’s first SEC sweep on the line, Cox fended off Stromberg 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 to deliver the 4-0 final. Ruger also held a lead at No. 5 singles when the match was clinched.

The Dores welcomed Eastern Illinois for the second match of the afternoon. It was also a doubleheader day for the Panthers, who traveled to Nashville after falling 7-0 to MTSU in Murfreesboro.  Vanderbilt again jumped out early by claiming the doubles point. Juniors Tighe Brunetti and Mitchell Deames teamed up to produce their second doubles win of the dual season in a 6-0 route of William Hays and Fabian Planchard. Despite generating contested first sets at the top two positions in singles, the Panthers were simply outmatched by the Dores. Vanderbilt picked up wins across the board, including from freshman Giuseppe Cerasuolo and sophomore Oscar Jensen, who each collected their second dual match victory of the year. The result marks the fifth sweep for the Dores so far.

“Without the continued commitment of our players in trusting the process and staying the course throughout the season, today would not have been possible,” Brown said. “Full focus on Arkansas and Oklahoma next week. Fight Dores.”

No. 58 Vanderbilt (10-13, 2-10 SEC) continues its homestand against No. 41 Arkansas (16-11, 4-8 SEC) on Thursday. For more information, updates and exclusive game day content, follow the Vanderbilt men’s tennis team, @VandyMTennis, on Instagram and X.
