NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The honors continue to roll in for Gordon Sargent.
On Wednesday, Sargent was named the recipient of the 2022 NCAA Division I Phil Mickelson Outstanding Freshman Award presented by StrackaLine. He is the first Vanderbilt golfer to win the honor.
Sargent has had a remarkable season for the Commodores, a season that was highlighted Monday when he won the NCAA individual national championship thanks to a birdie on the 18th hole to win a four-way playoff. Sargent became just the ninth freshman to win a national championship and just the second Commodore to win an individual national title in any sport.
A Birmingham, Alabama, native, Sargent has also been named a PING First-Team All-American, a Haskins Award finalist, First Team All-SEC and the SEC Freshman of the Year. Sargent won his first collegiate event in April at the Mossy Oak Collegiate Championship.
Sargent finished his freshman campaign with a 70.03 stroke average and went 2-3 in match play contests.
Other winners of the award include Rickie Fowler of Oklahoma State Patrick Cantlay of UCLA, Justin Thomas of Alabama and Scottie Scheffler of Texas.
