Rockwell Qualifies for US Amateur Championship

7/27/2006

HAMPSTEAD, Md. — Incoming Vanderbilt freshman Chris Rockwell qualified for the 2006 United States Amateur Championship with a two-round score of 143 to place third at a sectional qualifier hosted by the Piney Branch Golf Club on July 24.

A native of Owings Mills, Md., Rockwell will join some of the nation’s top amateur golfers at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., from August 21-27.

“This is a great accomplishment for Chris and for our program,” Head Coach Tom Shaw said. “It is an impressive feat for Vanderbilt to be represented at this event by three outstanding student-athletes.”

Rockwell’s qualification comes a week after rising VU sophomore Jon Curran carded the lowest score at the National Golf Club of Kansas City to earn his spot in this year’s U.S. Amateur. VU senior Luke List also will participate in the event, receiving an exempt entry into the tournament after placing second in the 2004.

Qualification for the event, which included 312 players in 2005, continues for the next three weeks.
