Rising Vanderbilt sophomore Chris Rockwell qualified for the United States Amateur Championship for the second time in as many years, shooting a four-under 138 over two days on the par 71, 6,870-yard layout of the Piney Branch Golf Club in Hampstead, Md.
A native of Owings Mills, Md., Rockwell will join the nation’s top amateur golfers at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, Calif., August 20-26. The U.S. Amateur Championship, in its 107th year, is making its third appearance at the Olympic Club.
Rockwell placed third at Piney Branch, edging out Australian Tim Stewart for the section’s final spot. Raymond Sheedy of Keymar, Md., placed first in the sectional qualifying event. He and Rockwell both advance through the Hampstead section for the second consecutive year.
The United States Amateur Championship is the oldest of the 13 Championships conducted by the United States Golf Association, and is the most prestigious amateur event in the nation.
More than 300 players participated in last year’s event. The tournament consists of two rounds of stroke play followed by a match-play bracket featuring the low 64 players.
