SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Rising sophomore Chris Rockwell and junior Jon Curran both advanced to match play at the 2007 United States Amateur Championship Wednesday.
Rockwell’s ticket was signed early in the morning after the Owings Mills, Md., native carded a two-under 68 in his second round of stroke play at the Olympic Club. Rockwell used four birdies and two pars on his final six holes to make the 36-hole cut by two strokes at five-over.
The 315-player field was scheduled to be reduced to 64 players by Tuesday night, but inclement weather conditions delayed the process. Curran, making his second appearance at the U.S. Amateur, finished 36 holes at seven-over, forcing him into a 16-man playoff for the final seven spots in the 64-man tournament.
The Hopkinton, Mass., product outlasted his opponents to make the match play field. Curran will face Alex Prugh, formerly of the Washington Huskies, in the first round of match play at 3 p.m. PT Wednesday.
Rockwell’s first round opponent in the match play bracket is 2007 Arizona graduate Nathan Tyler, who recently captured the 83rd Arizona Amateur Championship. The pairing is scheduled to tee off around 12:30 p.m. PT.
The 107th United States Amateur Championship continues through August 26.
