Road Trip Starts With Sooners

Men's tennis kicks off four-match road trip against Oklahoma

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — After coming off a 4-2 rivalry win over Tennessee, Vanderbilt men’s tennis looks to build on the momentum in a road test against Oklahoma on Friday.

The Dores took down the Volunteers on Monday for the first time since 2018, highlighted by their third straight doubles point. Vanderbilt (9-3, 1-1 SEC) sits on its longest home streak since 2003 at 11 consecutive match victories; the 2003 Commodore team that last accomplished that feat finished as an NCAA runner-up. Vandy will have to wait for the opportunity to add to that stretch, though, as Friday’s match against Oklahoma (9-2, 1-1 SEC) marks the start of a four-match road trip. The black and gold are led in singles wins by senior Nathan Cox, who extended his career-best streak to 11 against Tennessee. He remains unbeaten in dual match singles play. Cox, along with junior Hugo Coquelin, lead the Dores in doubles wins with four.

Oklahoma enters Friday after two straight home matches decided by one point. The Sooners suffered their first home loss of the year, 4-3, to No. 22 South Carolina on Feb. 21 before fending off Ole Miss 4-3 in Norman two days later. Both of Oklahoma’s losses have been 4-3 scores, with the other coming to UCF on Jan. 24 during ITA Kickoff Weekend.

Luis Carlos Alvarez Valdes is the highest ranked Sooner in the ITA singles rankings at No. 49, followed by Oscar Lacides at No. 79 and Asahi Harazaki at No. 89. Alvarez has produced five straight singles victories, primarily coming at the No. 2 position. Oklahoma is also represented in the doubles rankings, led by No. 54 Lacides and Bruno Nhavene along with No. 71 Orel Kimhi and Johan Alexander Rodriguez.

Vanderbilt’s only ranked win of the 2025 season came against the No. 22 Sooners, a 4-3 comeback victory on Senior Day. It was the first meeting between the two teams in program history. The Commodores will attempt to end their current road skid in Norman, having dropped three straight away from Nashville to start the year. Vandy’s most recent SEC road victory came last season in a 4-3 takedown of LSU on Feb. 24.

Friday’s match between Vanderbilt and Oklahoma is set to begin at 4 p.m. from the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
