PARIS – Playing in the French Open for the first time in his career, former Vanderbilt men’s netter Bobby Reynolds advanced to the second round of the main singles draw at Roland Garros on Wednesday.
Ranked No. 104 in the world, Reynolds defeated No. 109 Thierry Ascione of France, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the first round. Both players dealt with adverse weather conditions during the match. Following the second set, play had to be suspended due to rain for a prolonged period of time.
Reynolds will now face No. 69 Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador in the second round of the tournament. Reynolds is also competing in the main doubles draw with Rajeev Ram. The duo will face Agustin Calleri and Lapentti in the first round.
The win at a Grand Slam event for Reynolds is his first since 2005 when he advanced to the round of 32 at the Australian Open.
