Quick Slant: Full speed ahead

Dec. 26, 2010

franklin_250_qs_rw.jpgQuick Slant is an array of brief insights and occasionally opinionated overviews of collegiate athletics in general and the Vanderbilt Commodores in particular.

  • The weekend after his Friday press conference, James Franklin worked 40 hours. So much for the 40-hour work week! So much to do, so little time to do it…hiring staff, recruiting, discussing facility upgrades, learning about Vanderbilt, finding his way around town. Those of us in the communications wing realize we have a very willing coach gifted with public relations skills and are trying to work in early media avails while not stepping on James’ frenetic pace. He’s already interacted with many area journalists and once his schedule gets a bit saner, fans will see and hear plenty about James Franklin and our program.
  • Experience is a good teacher. After weeks of the Rumor of the Day, my New Year’s Resolution is to be more careful about jumping to conclusions over matters in which I don’t know all the facts. I was exasperated with sloppy, erroneous reporting during our coaching search and yet encouraged by those professionals that would have loved to have broken the story but were more concerned with being accurate. The weakest reporters network through shadowy, hear-say communities and operate on the premise that they will be rewarded for being first, not remembered for times they are wrong.
  • The next time you are in Memorial Gymnasium, check out the Corridor of Champions by the practice gym. We’ve updated photos and displays; be sure to notice the tribute to the late Roy Skinner, which has a nice variety of our great coach’s awards and photographs.

It’s Good to be Gold! Happy holidays to everyone.
