Preston Takes First Team SEC Honors

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Commodore team captain Ryan Preston took All-SEC First Team honors for his 13-8 (6-6) performance at No. 1 singles in 2006.

In 2005, Preston played predominantly at No. 5 singles and had an overall record of 18-5. Over the summer, Preston sharpened his skills on the circuit, and even took the ITA Midwest Regional title.

By the start of 2006, the team elected captain had jumped to the front of the singles lineup, and maintained a winning record while facing some of the top competitors in the country.

Preston started off SEC season by snapping Alabama’s Joseph Jung’s 15-0 streak with a straight set road win (7-5, 6-3). At the SEC home opener, #70 Preston suffered a straight set loss to Arkansas’ #25 Adrian Zguns, but when the two were fated to meet again at the SEC tournament, Preston handed the loss right back to Zguns, winning 6-3. 6-2.

As conference season continued, Preston took SEC Indoors Champion Ken Skupski to a third set tiebreaker, and had has biggest upset of the season against Ole Miss’ #16 Erling Trait (6-1, 7-5).

Preston was also one of team’s leading doubles players, finding SEC doubles success with partner Jordan Magarik. The tandem broke even in SEC play (6- 6), helping the ‘Dores to key upsets against Mississippi State and Tennessee. By the conclusion of the season, Preston stood with an 11-10 overall doubles record.
