– With the win, Vanderbilt moves to 18-11 overall and 7-8 in SEC action. LSU drops to 25-5 and 13-2 in league play. The win snapped a 10 game overall winning streak and a 13 game SEC winning streak.
The Commodores started junior Jermaine Beal, sophomore A.J. Ogilvy, and freshmen Jeffery Taylor, Steve Tchiengang, and Brad Tinsley. It was the 13th time Vanderbilt has used that starting lineup and have a record of 8-5.
– Vanderbilt leads the all-time series with LSU, 56-48, and narrowed the Tigers lead in the series in Baton Rouge to 28-20. The Commodores have won their last two games at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.
– It was Vanderbilt’s first win over a ranked opponent on the road since January 24, 2007, when the Commodores knocked off the 24th ranked LSU Tigers, 64-53.
– Sophomore center A.J. Ogilvy posted a career-high 33 points and added 10 rebounds in the win. It was his fourth double-double of the season and the eighth of his career. It was his first ever 30+ point scoring game, and the second consecutive game in which he has set a new career high.
– With his performance against LSU, Ogilvy became the first sophomore in the history of Vanderbilt basketball to eclipse the 1,000 point barrier (1,006). Vanderbilt legend Clyde Lee scored 1,100 points in his first two seasons in a Commodore uniform as a sophomore and junior. Freshmen were not eligible in those years (1963-65).
First half notes – Vanderbilt 37 LSU 26
– After a two point basket by Terry Martin at the 19:28 mark in the first half, the Commodores went on a 13-2 run to take the lead for good against the Tigers. LSU tied the game with 5:51 to go in the game (60-60), but never took the lead.
– A.J. Ogilvy scored 14 points in the first half. Jermaine Beal added 12 points.
– Vanderbilt shot 50% from the floor in the first half, compared to only 36.2% for LSU. The Tigers did not make a three-point basket in the first half, while VU made 3-of-9.
– With Beal’s 3-pointer at the 14:00 mark in the first half, the Commodores extended their streak for consecutive games with a three pointer to 726. VU has made a three-pointer in every game since the rule originated in the 1986-87 season.
– The Commodores outrebounded LSU, 20-18, in the first half.
– Wednesday marked the 16th time VU has led at the half – the Commodores are 16-0 in those games this year.
– Six different Commodores scored in the first half.
– Beal slammed home a monstrous dunk to give VU a 37-26 lead at the half.
Second half notes
– A.J. Ogilvy scored the team’s first eight points of the second half. He had 19 points in the second half.
– LSU tied the game at 60 with 5:51 to go in the game, but VU responded with a 6-0 run to push the league back up to six (66-60).
– The Tigers cut the lead to two, 68-66, when Brad Tinsley knocked in a three pointer to push the VU lead back to five (71-66). Tinsley scored all eight of his points in the last 4:43 of regulation.
– Vanderbilt shot 55% from the floor in the second half. LSU could only muster 38.5% from the field.
PostGame Notes
– Vanderbilt shot 51.9% for the game (27-52), while LSU made only 36.2% of its shots (21-58) from the floor. In VU’s last two games, the Commodores are 58-102 (.569) from the field.
– LSU outrebounded Vanderbilt, 36-34, for the game. It marks the first time in seven games that an opponent has outrebounded the Commodores.
– Ogilvy tied his career-high for field goals made with 12.
– The Commodores committed only eight turnovers on the night, their lowest total in SEC play and their second lowest of the season (Furman, 12/22, 6).
– Ogilvy’s 33-point performance was the most for a Commodore since Shan Foster scored 42 points against Mississippi State last season on March 5 at Memorial Gym. It was also the most by an LSU opponent this season.
– Ogilvy has now scored in double figures in 56 of 61 games as a collegian.
– The Commodores are now 25-45 against ranked opponents in the Kevin Stallings era (1999-present). All-time, VU is 79-199 against ranked opponents and 18-120 in designated road games.
– Vanderbilt is now 6-3 in non-televised games this year.
– VU got their third win of the season on the road and second in league play.
– Head Coach Kevin Stallings is now 7-6 against LSU as head coach at Vanderbilt, and 3-2 against LSU in Baton Rouge.
