Palmer Cup Awaits

Seniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris travel across the pond to represent the United States at the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A pair of Vanderbilt men’s golfers are set to represent the United States across the pond this Fourth of July weekend, as seniors Gordon Sargent and Jackson Van Paris will participate at the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup on July 5-7 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland.

The 2024 Palmer Cup begins Friday with mixed four-ball matches and continues Saturday with foursome matches. The event concludes with singles matches on Sunday. Golfers tee off at 2:30 a.m. CT on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday begins at 1:30 a.m. CT. There will be no live stream of the 2024 Arnold Palmer Cup, but fans can follow all of the action via live results at GolfStat.com.

It is the third time that Sargent will participate in the Palmer Cup, as he was a member of Team USA each of the last two years. It will be Van Paris’ debut at the Palmer Cup, as Team USA head coach Matt Thurmond selected him.

Sargent is the all-time leader in wins at Vanderbilt (6) and is currently ranked No. 1 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He becomes the fourth men’s golfer ever to play in three or more Palmer Cups for Team USA. Sargent will be looking to help the Stars and Stripes claim its second-straight Palmer Cup, as he went 3-0-1 during last year’s event. The Birmingham, Alabama, native was named GCAA All-America first team for the third-straight season, while he also picked up his third first-team All-SEC selection. Sargent posted a runner-up finish in stroke play at the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships and recently competed at the U.S. Open.

Van Paris enjoyed a breakout 2023-24 campaign that saw him earn GCAA All-American honorable mention and All-SEC second-team honors. The Pinehurst, North Carolina, native made his PGA TOUR debut in March at the Puerto Rico Open, where he finished in a tie for 10th. In the fall, Van Paris earned his first collegiate victory at the inaugural St Andrews Links Collegiate, carding 9-under 131. Van Paris heads to Ireland ranked No. 8 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings and is fresh off a runner-up finish at the 2024 North & South Amateur, which took place last week in his hometown.

The Vanderbilt men’s golf team has a rich history at the Arnold Palmer Cup. A total of 10 Commodores have competed at the Palmer Cup, while Vanderbilt men’s golf head coach Scott Limbaugh led Team USA back in 2019. This year marks the fifth time that Vandy has had multiple golfers compete at the Palmer Cup.

The Arnold Palmer Cup, named after the legendary golfer, is an annual team golf competition for collegiate golfers. Since 2018 the event has been contested between a United States team and an international team representing the rest of the world. The teams consist of 12 men and 12 women.

Pro Dores Update
Cole Sherwood will make his PGA TOUR debut this week at the 2024 John Deere Classic in Silvis, Illinois, on July 4-7. Sherwood, who recently turned pro after a stellar four-year career at Vanderbilt, was awarded a sponsor exemption to play in the John Deere Classic.

He will be one of four former Dores to play at TPC John Deere this week. Will Gordon makes his return to the PGA TOUR at this week’s John Deere Classic, while Luke List and Brandt Snedeker will also compete at the event.
