Pair of Dores Ready for the 124th U.S. Open

Gordon Sargent and Wells Williams will be two of 16 amateurs competing at this week's U.S. Open

PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Gordon Sargent and junior Wells Williams of the Vanderbilt men’s golf team are set to participate in the 124th U.S. Open this week at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club.

Sargent will be playing in his second-straight U.S. Open after winning the 2023 Mark H. McCormack Medal for being the leading player in the World Amateur Golf Rankings following last year’s U.S. Amateur. Sargent posted the lowest score by an amateur at last year’s U.S. Open, as he carded 4-over 284 to finish in a tie for 39th.

Williams is participating in his first U.S. Open after posting 8-under-par 134 to grab the third and final spot from the Woodmont Country Club final qualifier. The junior from West Point, Mississippi, recently concluded his sophomore season at Vanderbilt, where he played in five tournaments for the Commodores.

The duo are just two of 16 amateur golfers competing at the U.S. Open, as Vanderbilt is the only NCAA Division I school to have multiple amateurs playing at the event.

The 124th U.S. Open will be held June 13-16 on the legendary Pinehurst No. 2 at the Pinehurst Resort and Country Club in Pinehurst, North Carolina. It is a 7,588-yard course that plays as a par-70 at the U.S. Open. It will be the fourth time Pinehurst No. 2 has hosted the U.S. Open, as they also held the event in 1999, 2005, and 2014.

Tee times for the first two rounds of the 124th U.S. Open are set. Williams opens Round 1 on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. CT and gets Round 2 started at 5:45 a.m. CT on Friday. Sargent will tee off Round 1 at 12:47 p.m. CT on Thursday, while he begins Round 2 on Friday at 7:02 a.m. CT.  The top 60 players and ties will make the 36-hole cut at the U.S. Open and advance to Rounds 3 and 4.

Moll, Riedel, and Sherwood will be playing in their second Korn Ferry Tour event after making their pro debut at last week’s BMW Charity Pro-Am. Moll was the only PGA Tour University alum to make the cut in their Korn Ferry Tour debut, as he finished at even par 285 to place 67th on the player leaderboard.
