KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The Vanderbilt swimming team is off to a solid start at the 2012 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships, with the 200 medley relay team setting a school record in the first swimming event of the meet.
The grouping of Chrissy Oberg, Elizabeth Brunk, Lauren Torres and Caroline Thomas posted a mark of 1:44.65 to set the school mark. It earned them a ninth place finish.
“It was a really strong start by the 200 medley relay breaking the team record,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Jeremy Organ said. “We got really good swims by all four girls and we’re really excited to have a start to the meet like that.”
The other women’s swimming event of the day was the 800 freestyle relay, which saw Thomas, Amy Salce, Erika Deardorf and Torres post a time of 7:38.01.
“We got a really good effort by all of the girls and some great swims, just came up a little bit short,” Organ said. “We got some swims we’re really happy with, especially from Erika Deardorf.”
Overall, Organ was pleased with the first day of action.
“It was a really good start to the first day and we’re looking forward to some great swims tomorrow morning.”
The Commodores currently sit in ninth place with 32 team points.
