NASHVILLE, Tenn. — In the first matchup between Vanderbilt and New Orleans since 2005, the Commodores remained unbeaten against the Privateers with a 100-56 win on Monday night.
Vanderbilt’s leading scorer, junior Jason Edwards, propelled the offense once again, posting 17 points to go along with five rebounds, one steal, and one assist. Edwards has now scored double-digit points in 40-straight games. Freshman Tyler Tanner notched a career-high 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting while contributing seven rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist. Junior Tyler Nickel added 19 points, knocking down five threes on the night while junior Devin McGlockton produced his third double-double on the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds.
The opening minutes saw back-and-forth play that left Vanderbilt (12-1) with a 12-9 lead at the 16-minute mark. The Commodores proceeded to go on a 12-2 scoring run over the next two minutes with McGlockton converting multiple baskets in that span. After New Orleans cut the deficit to 26-19, Vanderbilt relied on its No. 24 ranked scoring offense to seize back the momentum. The Dores knocked down four threes in the remainder of the half, pushing the score to 51-28 entering the halftime break. It marks the second time this season Vandy has cracked 50 points in the opening half.
Vanderbilt continued the scoring onslaught in the second half en route to the 44-point victory. In total, the Commodores shot 14-of-34 from three. It is the third consecutive game shooting 40 percent or more from deep. New Orleans was held to 32 percent shooting from the field. Vanderbilt outrebounded New Orleans, 43-35, including a 14-10 edge in offensive rebounds.
The Commodores have scored 100 points three times this season and are off to their best start since 2007-08. The victory gives Head Coach Mark Byington the best nonconference start by a first-year coach in program history.
Vanderbilt moves on to SEC play, as the Commodores look ahead to a road conference opener at LSU (11-2) on Jan. 4. The contest is set for a 3:30 p.m. tip-off with coverage available on ESPN2.
