NASHVILLE , Tenn. — Vanderbilt swimmer Chrissy Oberg has met the qualifying standard for the United States Olympic trials in the 200 meter backstroke and will head to the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb.
Oberg posted a time of 2:17.46 during a meet with her club team, the Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club in her native Spartanburg, S.C. The rising sophomore is swimming for coach Peter Wright over the summer.
She will now head to Omaha for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials to be held at the CenturyLink Center. The 200 meter backstroke will qualify on Saturday, June 30, for the right to represent the United States in the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Oberg becomes the first Vanderbilt swimmer to head to Olympic trials since the program was resurrected in 2006.
Head coach Jeremy Organ is excited for Oberg, as well as for the Vanderbilt program.
“It’s really exciting for Chrissy, but also for the program to have somebody at the U.S. Olympic team trials,” Organ said. “She’ll be representing her home club team, but also Vanderbilt University.”
Organ feels Oberg’s accomplishment is a big step in he process of building the still young Vanderbilt swimming program.
“It’s a really big step forward for everybody,” Organ said.
