Team Record and Series Notes:
-This is the 115th year of Vanderbilt basketball, with the first season taking place in 1900-01. There were no teams in 1904-05 and 1905-06.
-With the win, Vanderbilt improves to 2-1 on the season, while UNC Asheville drops to 1-2.
-Vanderbilt now leads the all-time series against UNC Asheville, 4-0. Tonight marked the first matchup between the two schools since Dec. 7, 1995, which resulted in an 80-66 victory for the Commodores.
-Tonight was the first time that Bryce Drew has faced UNC Asheville as a head coach.
Team Notes:
-Tonight marked Vanderbilt’s 1,002nd straight game with a three-point field goal. Vanderbilt is just one of three schools to have made a three-point basket in every game since the inception of the three-point line in the 1986-87 season. The others are Princeton and UNLV.
-Starters for tonight’s game were Saben Lee, Matthew Fisher-Davis, Jeff Roberson, Ejike Obinna and Riley LaChance.
-Vanderbilt shot 22-29 (76%) from the free throw line. It marked the second straight game that the Commodores knocked down 22 free throws.
-Despite trailing 37-35 at halftime, Vanderbilt raced out to an 11-2 run in the second half and did not relinquish the lead from there. In total, the game only featured two lead changes, and the Commodores led for a total of 24:41 in game time.
-Djery Baptiste, Matthew Fisher-Davis and Riley LaChance went a combined 7-8 from the free throw line in the game’s final 36 seconds to help seal the win for the Commodores.
Player Notes:
-Freshmen Saben Lee and Ejike Obinna both earned their first career starting nods.
-Jeff Roberson finished the game with 17 points and 12 rebounds, good for his third consecutive double-double. The last Commodore to have three straight double-doubles was Dan Langhi in 1998.
-Roberson has led the Commodores in rebounds in each of the team’s first three games.
-Roberson also went a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line, which tied his career-high mark for free throws made.
-Roberson was joined in double-fiugres scoring by Riley LaChance (17 points), Matthew Fisher-Davis (17) and Djery Baptiste (13).
-LaChance made four three-pointers on the night, doubling his season total. He is now 8-18 (44%) from behind the arc this season.
-Baptiste’s 13 points marked a new career high. His previous best was eight points, which he accomplished twice, most recently on Feb. 25, 2017 against Mississippi State.
-Baptiste also set a new career high in rebounds with eight, breaking his old personal
-Saben Lee finished with a team-high five assists. Lee has led the Commodores in assists in each of the team’s three games this season.
