LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 7 Kentucky overpowered the Commodores in the final match of the regular season, defeating Vanderbilt 6-1 on Saturday afternoon in Lexington.
The Wildcats started with a sweep in doubles, with No. 55 Alex Musialek and Anthony Rossi beating Blake Bazarnik and Jeff Offerdahl 8-1. No. 11 Eric Quigley and Panav Jha clinched the point with an 8-3 win over #17 Gonzales Austin and Alex DiValerio.
Charlie Jones and Joe Dorn forced Alejandro Gomez and Tom Jomby to fight for their point, nearly preventing a sweep, but the Wildcats won out in the end, 8-7 (6).
In singles play, the Wildcats jumped out early with big wins in the first set to put the Dores behind in all six matches. No. 22 Rossi put the Wildcats up 2-0 with his win over Bazarnik, and No. 104 Alejandro Gomez put Kentucky within a point of the victory, beating Anton Kovrigin 6-1, 6-4.
No. 11 Quigley clinched the match, defeating No. 34 Jones in straight sets.
Michael Retta, playing in the sixth position, forced a tiebreaker in the second set but fell 7-6(5).
Offerdahl picked up the lone point for the Commodores, defeating No. 67 Jomby in a 12-10 tiebreaker third set.
The Commodores finish the regular season 7-14 (2-9) and head to the SEC tournament in Starkville next week.
