The 19th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team fell to sixth-ranked Duke, 13-4, Thursday at the Vanderbilt Lacrosse Complex.

VU Senior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli made 14 saves in the defeat. Duke’s Megan Huether saved nine Commodore shots.

Vanderbilt was led offensively by junior Kate Hickman, who scored two goals on the day. Senior Meg Spies and sophomore Kendall Thrift also tallied goals for Vanderbilt.

Two Blue Devils, Katie Chrest and Kristen Waagbo, tossed in hat tricks, while Duke’s Rachel Sanford and Leigh Jester both accounted for a pair of goals.

Vanderbilt was able to hang with Duke for the entire first half. The two teams opened the game by trading goals in the opening 14 minutes. Duke would take a two-goal lead in the 16th minute, but Vanderbilt answered back with a Spies goal to make the score 4-3. In the 22nd minute, Sanford gave Duke a 5-3 lead, and that score would hold through the halftime break.

Duke scored four straight goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to expand its lead to 9-3. Hickman’s second goal of the game brought Vanderbilt to within five at 9-4, but the Commodores were unable to find the back of the net again.

In the final 15 minutes of the game, the Blue Devils would score four more goals to grab the 13-4 victory.

The Commodores (2-4) have played three of the nation’s top 12 teams in the last seven days. Their next match is Monday, March 28, when the Stanford Cardinal visit the VU Lacrosse Complex for a 2 p.m. contest.
