No. 3 Vanderbilt Men Open Spring Tennis Season At SEC Indoors

Seven members of the third-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team will take part in the 2004 Southeastern Conference Coaches’ Indoor Championships this weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. The five-day tournament features 20 of the nation’s top 100 players, including four ranked Commodores in junior Matt Lockin (No. 27), senior Zach Dailey (No. 45), junior Scott Brown (No. 46) and senior Chad Harris (No. 55).

During qualifying action, which takes place on Thursday, 32 players will be vying for eight spots in the main draw. Senior Lewis Smith will be the first Commodore to take to the courts in Athens. Smith’s match against Erik Claesson of Ole Miss is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. ET. Freshman Nathan Sachs will face Tennessee’s Kiril Tcherveniachki at 10:30 a.m., with sophomore Greg Sossaman taking on Ben Atkinson of South Carolina. Thursday morning’s winners will face off in the afternoon for a chance to advance to the main draw.

Four Commodores have earned their way straight into the main draw. The sixth-seeded Lockin, the ninth-seeded Dailey and the10th-seeded Brown all will have byes during Friday morning’s first round. Harris is scheduled to face one of the eight qualifiers in his first round tussle.

The Commodores will be looking to keep the SEC Indoor trophy in Nashville. The singles title was captured a year ago by then-Vanderbilt junior Bobby Reynolds.

Doubles action will begin on Saturday, Jan. 17. Doubles draw will be available on Friday. The championship matches for both singles and doubles of the 2004 SEC Coaches’ Indoor Championships will take place on Monday, Jan. 19.
