No. 24 Vanderbilt defeats No. 37 Mississippi State, 5-2
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 24th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team closed out the 2004 regular season with a 5-2 win over Southeastern Conference rival Mississippi State at the Belmont University Tennis Courts Sunday. The Commodores play host to the 2004 SEC Men’s Tennis Tournament at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center next week, April 22-25.
The Commodores took an early lead over the Bulldogs with a pair of 8-4 wins at first and second doubles. Senior Chad Harris and junior Scott Brown defeated MSU’s Jose-Carlos Pinto and Luiz Carvalho on court one. Memphis natives Zach Dailey and Lew Smith also were victorious for the Commodores at second doubles, where they defeated Florent Girod and Max Fomine of Mississippi State. In singles play, the Bulldogs would take four first sets and begin to mount a comeback. Wins at fifth and sixth doubles gave MSU a 2-1 lead in the match. But the first four courts would all go to three sets and Vanderbilt was finally able to find a rhythm. At fourth singles, junior Matt Lockin defeated Fomine, 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-3. The Commodores took the lead back when Dailey won at third singles over Luiz Carvalho, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Brown clinched the match at second singles with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Pinto. At first singles, 24th-ranked Harris rallied to defeat 31st-ranked Ambert, 4-6, 7-6 (8), 6-3. The Commodores finish the 2004 regular season with a 14-10 record, 6-5 in the SEC. They will begin play in the SEC Tournament at 1:15 p.m. CT on Thursday, April 22. The tournament begins at 8 a.m. Thursday, and the Commodores’ match will be the fourth of the day.
