No. 20 VU Men’s Tennis Travels To No. 17 Tennessee, No. 10 Georgia KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — The 20th-ranked Vanderbilt men’s tennis team takes on a pair of Southeastern Conference Eastern Division rivals this weekend during a road trip through Knoxville, Tenn., and Athens, Ga. The Commodores will face the 17th-ranked Volunteers at UT’s Varsity Courts on Friday, April 2, at 2 p.m. CT, and then continue on to the Dan Magill Tennis Complex for a match with the 10th-ranked Bulldogs on Sunday, April 4, at Noon CT. Vanderbilt (12-6, 5-2 SEC) holds a slight edge in the race for the SEC Eastern Division crown as the first team to five wins. The Commodores are one-half game ahead of both Georgia and No. 22 Kentucky, who stand at 4-2 in the league. Vanderbilt opened the 2004 SEC slate with wins over then-No. 3 Florida and No. 19 South Carolina and also have defeated Arkansas, Alabama and Auburn. The Volunteers (10-5, 3-3 SEC) split a pair of SEC matches last weekend, losing to South Carolina, 4-3, before defeating Florida, 5-2. The Dores shutout UT, 7-0, last season in Nashville. Tennessee is led by 45th-ranked Simon Rea, who has posted a 14-7 record this season. The Bulldogs (12-3, 4-2 SEC) have won their last two conference matches after opening the SEC season at 2-2. Vanderbilt defeated UGA twice last year — in the regular season, 7-0, and the SEC Tournament, 4-0. The Commodores have been quite successful during their recent trips to Athens. Last May, Vanderbilt reached the championship match of the NCAA Tournament; In the fall, junior Matt Lockin won the 2003 Southern Intercollegiate Championship; and in January seniors Zach Dailey and Chad Harris shared the SEC Coaches Indoor Championship. Head Coach Ken Flach and the Commodores will return home next week to face MTSU at the Brownlee O. Currey Jr. Tennis Center on Wednesday, April 7, at 2 p.m. |
