NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The 19th-ranked Commodores lacrosse team (3-3) picked up its biggest win of the season on Saturday, upsetting the 9th-ranked Boston University Terriers (3-2) at the VU Lacrosse Complex, 10-5.
Vanderbilt opened the game with six straight goals as the Commodores were in control from start to finish. The Terriers cut the lead to 7-3 going into the half before the ‘Dores opened the second half with three quick goals to put the game out of reach.
The ‘Dores received a breakout performance from sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wills, who totaled 13 saves to pick up the win while only allowing five goals scored. “This was just a huge win for us,” said Wills. “For 60 minutes, that was our ball. From attack to midfield to defense, we had so much support on the sidelines. It was a whole team effort. We could feel it inside and out.”
Despite goalkeeper Rachel Klein’s 18 saves, Boston University was unable to slow down the Commodores’ persistent offensive attack. Sarah Downing, Ally Carey, Allie Frank, and Katherine Denkler each scored two goals for the ‘Dores. McKinley Curro led all Terrier scorers with two goals.
Defensively, senior Alex Mundy and sophomore Ally Carey each had strong performances for Vanderbilt. Mundy finished with three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Carey recorded five ground balls, three caused turnovers, and three draw controls.
Vanderbilt Head Coach Cathy Swezey was impressed with her team’s play. “I couldn’t be more pleased to see our team finally play at the potential that I know we’ve had all along,” said Swezey. “It started from top to bottom, from the effort in goal with Natalie all the way down to our defense. Every single kid played with 110% effort, and it showed in the stats and it showed in our ability to come away with the win.”
The Commodores’ four game homestand continues on Wednesday, when Vanderbilt hosts Louisville at the VU Lacrosse Complex. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. CT.
