NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The 11th ranked Commodore lacrosse team dropped its season opener to No. 5 Duke on Sunday, 10-19 at the VU Lacrosse Complex.

Katherine Denkler’s goal with 12:53 left in the first period brought the Commodores within one goal before the Blue Devils (2-0) scored five unanswered goals.

After taking a 10-5 halftime lead, Duke went on to close out the victory behind the strong efforts of junior Virginia Crotty and sophomore Kat Thomas, who netted four goals each.

“I was impressed with Duke’s performance and thought they came out and gave us a really good game,” said Commodore Head Coach Cathy Swezey. “I think that we have a little bit of growing to do in the next week and hopefully we’ll do that and give Carolina a little bit better of a game.”

Tewaaraton Trophy candidate senior Sarah Downing led all scorers for Vanderbilt with three goals. Senior Anastasia Adam also added two goals. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Wills totaled 13 saves.

The `Dores (0-1) travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, to face No. 4 North Carolina (1-0) Friday night. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. ET.

Vanderbilt’s next home game will be on Wednesday, March 10, against Longwood.
