DAVIDSON, N.C. — A five-point day from freshman Kendall Thrift was one of many highlights from the Vanderbilt women’s lacrosse team’s 20-5 win over American Lacrosse Conference rival Davidson. Sophomore Kate Hickman added four goals to the Commodore effort, while seniors Michelle Allen, Jess Roguski and Lauren Peck each chipped in three points.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = “urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office” />

Thrift scored the first goal of her VU career in the 26th minute, and followed that up with three more tallies. Freshman Jennifer Tapscott also scored her first collegiate goal during a game that saw Head Coach Cathy Swezey utilize all 22 members of her travelling squad.

The Commodores dominated possession the entire afternoon. The won 23-of-27 draw controls on the day, including six by Roguski at center. Half of Vanderbilt’s 20 goals were a direct result of controlling the draw.

Hickman scored the first goal of the match only :27 seconds in off an assist from Peck. Senior defender Bridget Morris came up with a loose ball in the sixth minute and found Hickman for her second goal of the day. Only :33 seconds later, Peck would give VU a 3-0 lead.

Davidson would score its first goal in the ninth minute. The Wildcats were unable to mount a rally, however, as a save made by VU’s junior goalkeeper Ashley Bastinelli on a Wildcat free position shot led right to an Allen goal. Davidson managed only two more goals in the half, as Bastinelli came up with five first-half saves.

The Commodores would score seven more goals in the half to take an 11-3 lead into the break. Hickman, senior Kelly Devlin, Allen, junior Meg Spies, Thrift and Peck all found the back of the net for Vanderbilt in the final 15 minutes of the first half.

The second half was much of the same. Vanderbilt continued to dominate possession, allowing Davidson only one draw control in the entire second half. The Commodores closed an eight-goal run in the 39th minute to take a 16-3 lead. Roguski, sophomore Bryn Sedlacek, Hickman, Morris and Thrift helped VU score the first five goals of the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Brooke Shinaberry allowed only two goals in the second half while making a pair of saves and an interception. A number of other freshmen stepped in to play key roles in the match as well, including Nicole Pugno, who caused a pair of turnovers and picked up two ground balls. Sophomore Dana Messinger and freshmen Millie Canter and Alison Sparico also contributed to the VU effort by picking up ground balls in the second half.

The Dores held a 41-12 advantage in shots and connected on nearly half of their attempts despite 10 saves by Wildcat goalkeeper Leslie Smith.

Vanderbilt (7-3, 2-1 ALC) returns to Nashville for its final homestand of the season, which includes matches against ALC-rivals Ohio and Ohio State on April 16 and 18, respectively.
