NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Sarah Downing led the Commodore lacrosse team with three goals, but the No. 11 `Dores fell to No. 1 Northwestern 22-10 at home Friday evening. A strong second half performance surged the Wildcats past VU, in both teams’ conference opening games.
Coach Cathy Swezey’s squad handed the `Cats their first deficit of the season at 2-1 five minutes into the contest. NU quickly tied the scored and went ahead again before the `Dores grabbed a 4-3 advantage. Northwestern responded, however, scoring five consecutive goals to take the lead for good.
Vanderbilt continued to battle pulling within striking distance at halftime down 9-6. Carter Foote put the `Dores within reach at 9-7 with a goal assisted by Katherine Denkler one minute into the second period. The Wildcats then proceeded to score five goals in five minutes to put the game out of reach.
Downing finished with four total points, including an assist, while Foote netted two goals and Denkler sank one. Cara Giordano also reached the net twice, and freshman Ally Carey garnered a goal.
The Commodores will head to Virginia Tech next for their first road game of the season. The `Dores and Hokies square off at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 3.
