VU has team, individual lead after first round of Nike Collegiate

FORT WORTH, Texas – The Vanderbilt men’s golf team has the first-round team and individual lead at the Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational at the Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas after the first day of play. The Commodores, one of seven top 20 teams competing in the event, posted a one-over par, 281 in their first round to lead all teams while redshirt sophomore Mason Greenberg has the individual lead after a bogey-free, four-under par 66 at the par-70, 7,204-yard layout.

The Commodores were a steadying force all day, hanging around the top of the leaderboard for most of the first round after leading the tournament in par-three scoring (3.05) and ending the day second in birdies with 14.

Vanderbilt counted Greenberg’s 66, an even-par 70 from senior Will Gordon, a two-over 72 from senior Patrick Martin, and a three-over 73 from junior John Augenstein.  Gordon tied the tournament lead in par-four scoring, averaging 3.75 strokes per each par-four hole, while Augenstein tied for the lead in par-three scoring (2.25 stokes), and Martin tied for the best par-five scoring total (4.0).

“I am proud of the boys and the way we started with some energy and finished well,” said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh.  “We talked about being tough enough to stick to our plan no matter what happened and we did that for the most part. Obviously, Mason played a great round today that really lifted the team up.”

Greenberg has a one-shot lead on Wake Forest’s Eric Bee and a two-shot lead on Turk Pettit of Clemson and Issei Tanabe of USC.  As a team, the Commodores hold a one-shot advantage on Clemson and Wake Forest and a two-shot lead on Texas.

Vanderbilt won this event the last time it was played at Colonial in 2016.

“Today was a good start for us and a lot of good things happened,” said Limbaugh.  “We made some simple mistakes that we will need to do better going forward and continue to embrace just playing the game, doing it for each other, and having some fun.”

Play continues Monday for the second round, with the Commodores beginning their round at 9:30 CT at Colonial.  Live stats can be found throughout the tournament on Golfstat.com.
