Gordon drops quarterfinal match at U.S. Amateur

Commodore rising senior Will Gordon fell 2 & 1 in his quarterfinal match at the U.S. Amateur to Isaiah Salinda at the Pebble Beach Golf Links on Friday.

Salinda led for the entirety of the match and grew his lead to 4-up after the first five holes, but the Commodore senior did not go away quietly.  Gordon won three consecutive holes on seven, eight, and nine, and cut his deficit to one 1-down at the turn.  After briefly going 2-up on the 10th, Salinda held on to his 1-up lead until the 16th, when he pushed his lead back to 2-up and eventually won his match 2 & 1.

Gordon was unlucky for most of the day, with four putts lipping out, including a putt on 15 that would have made the match all square.

Gordon’s quarterfinal run capped a remarkable week at the U.S. Amateur for Commodore Golf, where three Commodores, Gordon, John Augenstein, and Harrison Ott, made the match-play portion of the tournament, the most by any collegiate program.

The Commodores will be back at Pebble Beach for the Carmel Cup August 31 through September 2.
